Am I Hungry? Mindful Weight Management
A new 8-week course teaching on mindful eating
| Eat mindfully and live vibrantly! This non-diet, intuitive eating weight management programs help you to tune into your body, stop dieting and start living!

Anti-inflammatory Diet
Calming your Immune system through food choices
| Chronic inflammation is the root cause of many diseases and conditions; it can lead to pain, autoimmune illnesses, and even heart disease. OHSU is conducting NIH supported research in how certain foods may aggravate or calm the part of your immune system that produces inflammation. Take advantage of the related work OHSU is doing with this course that will teach the basics of the anti-inflammatory diet and how to incorporate this into your lifestyle in realistic and affordable ways. There will be a 60-minute nutrition lecture followed by an hour-log cooking demonstration. Participants will be able to sample the food prepared.
This course will be co-led by Chelsea Lenge, R.D.,registered dietician and Heather Zwickey, Ph.D., director of research, National College of Naturopathic Medicine; and our own General Clinical Research Center cooking staff.

Food For Life
Nutrition and cooking class for cancer prevention and survival
| This eight-week series covers a variety of cancer-related nutrition topics and demonstrates how to prepare eight full meals loaded with antioxidants and phytochemicals, high-fiber and low-fat foods, and healthy dairy alternatives. The series also includes a session on healthy weight maintenance and meal planning. Each class includes a 10-minute nutrition video followed by an hour-long cooking demonstration and sampling of the food prepared. Classes are open to cancer survivors, friends, family, and anyone interested in cancer prevention and healthy eating.

- Favoring Fiber
- Discovering Dairy Alternatives
- Replacing Meat
- Antioxidants and Phytochemicals
- Immune-Boosting Foods

Healthy Sack Lunches and Snacks
Quick and easy ideas to improve lunch for the whole family
| Are you in a lunch rut? No time to cook? Learn how to pack a lunch that is both nutritious and delicious! In this class you will learn how to make your own trail mix snack, with lots of variety. You’ll learn how to compare cost and nutrients of different snack and lunch items. Gather tips on how to sustainably pack your lunch and snacks that are good for you and the planet. We’ll also give you ideas on how to use your OHSU Farmers Market produce to compliment your away from home meals.

Heart Healthy Fats
Treat your heart right with Omega 3s
| Have you ever wondered what makes some fats healthy and others harmful? This class provides research supported information on types of fats and their role in the body. You will get a general overview of health benefits, concentrating on omega 3 fatty acids. Learn to identify foods that contain omega 3s and what portion sizes are right for you.
Walk away with information to apply at home, work, the grocery store, out to eat, and in your everyday life. Sample foods and watch a cooking demonstration of a heart healthy dish. Recipes and nutrition handouts will be provided.

Living Well Workshops
Healthy lifestyle workshops for people with chronic conditions and those that care for them
During a 6-week workshop, you will learn real-life skills for living a full, healthy life with a chronic condition. This course is recommended for people with all different chronic conditions and their family or friends. Chronic conditions include diabetes, asthma, depression, anxiety, heart disease, and other ongoing health concerns.
Classes are fun and interactive. Participants share their successes and build a common source of support. The workshop builds confidence around managing health, staying active, and enjoying life. Participants can anticipate door prizes and fun activities that will encourage motivation and renewed energy.
Class leaders are trained in the evidence-based Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) method developed by Stanford University.
A class fee of $30 covers 6 sessions and any class materials.

Macrobiotic Cooking for Optimal Health
Class and cooking demonstration
| The macrobiotic way of living, emphasizes eating local and seasonal whole foods. Macrobiotics has been a popular diet to follow for cancer prevention and survival. This class with include a 30 minute nutrition lecture on Macrobiotic diet principles and research, and will be followed by a 1 hour cooking demonstration. Participants will be able to sample the recipes.
This course will be taught by Chelsea Lenge, R.D.,registered dietician from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine.

Managing Stress With Mindfulness
A 6-week Mind-body Course
The OHSU Center for Women's Health invites you to a participatory, practical course teaching mindfulness techniques for stress management.
Mindfulness is a critical element in Mind-Body medicine. There is a large body of medical research supporting the benefits of mindfulness. When practiced in our daily lives, mindfulness reduces anxiety and pain, and complements medical and mental health care.
Managing Stress with Mindfulness provides specific skills for paying attention and for deep relaxation. The course includes:
- Guided instruction in mindfulness meditation practices
- Gentle stretching and body awareness practices
- Group dialogue
- Daily home assignments
- Mindfulness CD
- References and instructional handouts
Yael Schweitzer, L.C.S.W., is a clinical social worker and movement therapist, who has been teaching Mindfulness and Stress Reduction for more than 20 years. She has studied with Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, and with Dr. Herbert Benson at Harvard.

No-cook Summer Meals

| If you don’t feel like turning on the oven in the middle of summer, don’t sweat it! This class will provide you with fast, easy, healthy and delicious no-cook meals perfect for those hot summer days. We will be taking advantage of the abundance of colorful, seasonal foods to choose from in the Portland area. Demonstrations will include everything from sensational summer salads to cool and healthy desserts! Tips will be provided on the best ways to keep perishable food safe when picnicking or commuting. Whether you are preparing foods for the whole family or individual meals on the go, this class will make summer meal planning a breeze!

Teen Meal Planning
A fun class for you and your teen!
| Team up with your teen at this fun and practical class. Discover new recipe ideas and techniques that make eating healthy foods easy. Learn which nutrients are important for growing teens and how to incorporate them into daily meals. Transform your kitchen into a place where teens feel empowered to personalize their meals. Get inspired to cook and eat together as a family. Incorporate sustainable practices by reducing waste and reusing containers. Take away recipes, shopping ideas, and gardening plans. Women's Self Defense
An introduction to self defense specifically for women
This course is a 2-day session that is intended to instill confidence in women and to introduce a set of basic skills for self defense. At the same time, the training focuses on enhancing awareness and responsiveness to an assault under adverse situations. Techniques of self defense and means of protecting yourself and your loved ones will be reviewed. An added benefit of physical training is to improve physical fitness, general health and well-being. More advanced training to familiarize and refine techniques will be offered at future dates.
Cecilia Cheung, Ph.D., Adjunct Professor, Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, OHSU. Experience in the practice and teaching of karate and self defense for 25 years. Karate rank – 5th degree black belt. Sensei title.

Women’s Writing Workshops
Fall session details coming soon
The OHSU Center for Women's Health invites you to join with other women who have been diagnosed with cancer for a writing workshop.
This writing group will offer a confidential and relaxed setting to write stories that encourage health and healing. Participants will be invited to write in response to exercises and then to read their writing if they choose. Fellow writers will have the opportunity to positively respond to another's writing. This writing group will employ the Amherst Writers & Artists method (info at amherstwriters.com) and thus provide a safe and empowering environment to creatively explore your thoughts and feelings through writing.
Workshop leader, SuEllen Pommier, Ph.D. is an assistant professor, OHSU Division of Surgical Oncology. She is trained in the Amherst Writers & Artists method.
There is a small fee to participate. The fee varies by session length.

Yoga of Awareness Course
For strength, relaxation, and mind-body health
Yoga of Awareness is an innovative course that can help in managing stress and in living life more fruitfully. Participants who have completed this course in recent studies at Duke University Medical Center have reported:
- Decreases in symptoms such as fatigue, pain, hot flashes, sleep disturbance, and negative mood
- Increases in their energy level, and their abilities to relax and to face stressful situations
Yoga means "yoking" or "union". Far more than a mere exercise program, true yoga teaches the art of finding our balance and keeping our poise amidst the tumult of life's ever-changing challenges. Each class includes practice of gentle stretching exercises, meditation, and breathing exercises. The instructors originally developed this course as a mind/body medicine program for cancer patients, however, this version of the course will be designed for the general public and open to all. Yoga for Women With Cancer
In partnership with the OHSU Cancer Institute
| Taught by a nationally certified cancer yoga teacher and assisted by an OHSU oncology nurse and physical therapist.
Come join other women in a supportive environment designed to nourish you. We will engage in gentle stretching, strength building, breathing exercises, deep relaxation with guided imagery, and some aspects of meditation.
Ivy Ingram, M.A., has completed two 200-hour yoga teacher training programs as well as a specialized cancer and cardiac yoga teacher certification. She taught yoga at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston for three years and at several community-based locations in Portland, including in the Oregon prison system. She has a master's degree in Counseling Psychology.
Women in any stage of healing from cancer (at least 6 weeks post-surgery) are welcome. A signed release from your primary cancer care provider is required. Space is limited. Call 503 494-4580 to register now! |
