Women in Academic Medicine Committee

Promoting Leadership Opportunities for Women at OHSU


The Women in Academic Medicine Committee was established as a standing committee of the School of Medicine in 1993 to address issues of concern to women faculty including career advancement, participation by women on decision-making bodies at OHSU, pay equity, discrimination, and parenting and schedule flexibility issues. Women faculty, appointed by the Dean with the advice of the elected Committee on Committees, principally comprises this Committee. The perspectives of women medical and graduate students and residents are sought as well. Recommendations from the committee are designed to benefit all members of the School of Medicine.


Committee Goals:

A. Support, promote, and/or initiate policies and procedures that improve academic promotion and career advancement for women and men, with special attention to needs specific to women.

Methods:
  1. Work collaboratively with the Dean’s Office and his/her designees to provide for professional development for OHSU faculty.
  2. Use existing OHSU committees and governing bodies (e.g., Dean’s Office, Faculty Council, Faculty Senate, etc.) to achieve goals, when appropriate.
  3. Promote proper representation of women in leadership positions in the institution.
  4. Maintain national visibility and collaborate with similar committees at other institutions, and the AAMC.
  5. Annually review institutional data on the representation of women, promotion and tenure rates and compensation, and compare to other institutions.
  6. Communicate relevant information to women in faculty through the “wfac” list serve.
  7. Promote mentoring relationships between junior and senior faculty.

Advise the Dean regarding policies related to pay equity, pregnancy, family leave, childcare, campus safety and sexual harassment.

Methods:
  1. Review existing OHSU policies on these matters as requested and make recommendations to the Dean.
  2. Accept requests from the Dean for further inquiry and or recommendations.C. Advocate for advancement of medical research and education in women’s health and clinical services for women at OHSU.
