"TRANSFORMATIONS"
a new series in acrylic by LeslieAnn Butler
With proceeds going to fund women's health research
Dec. 7-23, in the Gottlieb Gallery
On First Thursday, Dec. 7, the public is invited to view the collection."These paintings are a bit of a departure from LeslieAnn's past works," says Julie Gottlieb, gallery owner. "You still see the brilliant colors and pliant shapes that characterize her work, but these paintings contrast that with deeper stories and burgeoning untold secrets. They are intelligent & mesmerizing."
A percentage of the sales from Butler's paintings will go to benefit the Oregon Health Science University's Breast and Ovarian Cancer Prevention Angels Program Fund. This program, a favorite of both Butler and Gottlieb, enables women of limited financial means to have high level and potentially life-saving genetic screening and other cancer risk reduction options.

Healthy Tips for the Holiday Season
Healthy Gift Ideas
Thank you for sharing your healthy gift ideas. We hope these ideas from fellow readers help you find healthy gifts for your friends and family this holiday season.
Exercise or Resistance Bands
They are light, inexpensive, and may be used to perform a wide variety of upper & lower-body exercises. This kind of exercise equipment is great great for frequent travelers because it can be used anywhere.
Pedometer
A pedometer, or step-counter, may help people get motivated to move more by keeping track of the number of steps they take each day. It can be a fun way to encourage someone walk more every day.
House Plants
One reader writes, "Houseplants make great gifts for holidays. They help clean and filter the air in your home, they give a splash of color and life to a room to liven up the sometimes dreary winter months, and they don't require wrapping paper - healthy for you and the environment!"
"For an extra special gift, keep a few vining plants (like a Wandering Jew or philodendron) in your own home, and a few weeks before the holidays, take a bunch of cuttings and put them in a jar of water to get some roots started. A week or so before you plan to give the gift, transplant them into a nice pot with soil to take root (place 5-8 cuttings in each medium-sized pot). You'll be giving a gift with all the above benefits, plus an added personal connection - healthy for relationships, too."
Inspirational Items
To promote peaceful moods, try a book of poetry or inspirational quotes, calm music, or even an aromatic candle.
Mind Works
Gifts that stretch the mind can encourage mental health and wellness. Try a book of puzzles and crosswords, or a board game. For an inexpensive option, share a skill by offering to teach someone how to make your favorite lasagna or knit a scarf.
Bike Tune-up or Sporting Equipment
Cyclists need tubes, repair kits and yearly tune-ups. Runners may need new shoes and rain gear. Ball players may need equipment and sportswear.
To encourage new active hobbies, try gift certificates for bowling, swimming, kayaking or any other activity.
Health Book
You can find a variety of health books for the people on your list. From general health maintenance to mind-body health, there are hundreds of books available and you may not know where to start. Find OHSU clinician recommended books at Seasons Specialty Shoppe in the Center for Women's Health or call our Education Resource Center at 503 418-4506 to ask about books recommended for different ages and health conditions.
Gym Membership, Fitness Class Card, or Personal Training Session
A class card for a fitness or aerobics studio may offer flexibility and a chance to try a new exercise medium. For loved ones who have gym memberships, consider a training session, massage or other service offered through their gym.
Don't leave yourself out. If you've been thinking about joining a gym, now may be the right time. Many gyms offer holiday and seasonal specials for memberships. Look for two-for-one specials and/or offer to be an exercise and carpool partner.
Vegetable Steamer or Salad Spinner
How about kitchen tools for preparing vegetables and fruits? One reader writes, "A good steamer makes cooking tasty vegetables easy." Another suggests, "Salad spinners are inexpensive and useful for washing salads and other vegetables and fruits."
Fruit Box or Basket
Another reader writes, "Instead of making cookies or treats for office or neighborhood parties - I like to share a basket of fruit. A bowl of nuts or box or oranges makes a great gift for neighbors or relatives."
