Medical and Surgical Termination of Pregnancy including Management of Miscarriage and Fetal Anomaly
We provide management of miscarriage, fetal anomaly and medical and surgical termination of pregnancy in a private and specialized outpatient environment. All patients receive comprehensive counseling regarding pregnancy options, procedure, and contraception. We provide 24-hour patient phone contact for emergencies.
Our physicians will help you determine the appropriate method:
- Medical termination of pregnancy
Non-surgical terminations using a combination of medications are offered to appropriate patients up to 56 days gestation. This procedure uses two medications to end a pregnancy. The first pill, mifepristone, is taken in the office with the physician. The second medication, misoprostol, is placed between the gums and cheeks at home. These two medications work together to end the pregnancy and empty the uterus. You will experience cramping and bleeding similar to a heavy period. Spotting and bleeding usually lasts for about two weeks. A return visit for a follow-up ultrasound is needed to ensure that the termination is complete.
- Surgical termination of pregnancy
This procedure is performed as a one-day procedure for pregnancies up to 14 weeks. Depending on the length of the pregnancy (gestational age), it may take one to three visits to provide a combination of agents to gently prepare the cervix and empty the uterus. Pregnancy terminations after 17 weeks and medically complex cases are performed in the operating room. Genetic testing of pregnancy tissue is performed in cases of abnormal pregnancy. In addition, several counseling options are available to help patients cope with emotional issues.
Anesthetic Options for Pregnancy Termination
- Local anesthetic
- Oral medications
- Moderate intravenous sedation
- General anesthetic (performed in the operating room)
